Abstract

Background and Objectives: Single thyroid nodule is a common clinical finding in patients with thyroid gland enlargment or with palpable mass in anterior neck. Because of various pathologic kinds and wide spectrum of nodules from inflammatory disease to benign and malignan tumors, pathologically diagnosis of disease is very important because treatment, prognosiss and approach will differ with respect to diagnosis. Because of importance and high incidence of disease, we decided to investigate records of patients in pathology department of Imam Reza hospital of Tabriz between 2011-14. Our goals were determination of pathologic incidence of single thyroid nodules and investigation of them by sex and age. After extracting results from records, we presented them in the form of tables and figure. Material and Methods: In total, 17349 patients referred to pathology department of Imam Reza hospital between 2011-14. In 191 cases the first clinical diagnosiss was single thyroid nodule. Thyroids specimes were sent to pathology department. Results: The most common pathologic report was multinodular goiter in 90 patients (47%). Other kinds were follicular adenoma 28%, papillary carcinoma 15%, follicular carcinoma and diffuse goiter 3%, lymphocytic thyroiditis, medulary carcinoma 1%, granuloma, lymphoma and abscess each one 0.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Most cases of thyroid nodules are nodular goiter and it is prevalent among females.
