Abstract

This book chapter provides an overview of otoplasty, a surgical procedure performed to correct the appearance and position of the ears. The chapter presents a case of left Stahl ear deformity, where an anterior auricular skin flap was raised, and the 3rd crus cartilage was excised and repaired to achieve bilateral ear symmetry. The postoperative period was uneventful, and satisfactory results were observed during follow-up examinations.

The chapter introduces otoplasty as a surgical technique primarily used to address prominent or protruding ears, correct ear deformities, and improve overall ear symmetry. It emphasizes the importance of patient evaluation and goal setting to determine the most suitable surgical approach and desired outcomes.

The surgical technique of otoplasty involves several approaches, including ear cartilage reshaping, ear pinning, and earlobe reduction. The choice of technique depends on the specific ear anatomy and the desired aesthetic goals. The chapter highlights the placement of incisions behind the ears to ensure minimal scarring, as well as the importance of postoperative care and recovery, including wound care, pain management, and activity restrictions.

Advantages of otoplasty discussed in the chapter include the enhanced appearance and self-confidence achieved through improved ear aesthetics, customization based on individual patient anatomy, and minimal scarring. However, the chapter also acknowledges limitations such as age considerations, realistic patient expectations, and potential complications.

The chapter emphasizes the importance of early intervention in children with ear deformities to minimize potential psychological impact and teasing. It highlights the need for patients to have realistic expectations and understand that the goal of otoplasty is to enhance their natural ear anatomy rather than achieve perfection. It also mentions the potential risks associated with otoplasty, including infection, bleeding, asymmetry, changes in sensation, or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome.

Overall, the chapter provides valuable insights into the surgical technique and considerations involved in otoplasty, highlighting its potential benefits and limitations for patients seeking to improve the appearance and position of their ears.
