Abstract

The present study conducted to find out the effect of atrazine at different concentration on gonads of B. carnaticus through histopathological examinations. LC50 concentrations of atrazine for B. carnaticus was found to be 7.5 ppm for 24 hr., 5ppm for 48 hr., 2.5 ppm for 72 hr. and 1.25 ppm for 96 hr., and 1/10th of the corresponding LC50 values were treated as sublethal concentrations. Study has showed inflammation, damaged seminiferous tubules with degenerative changes in interstitial cells in testis. Ovaries also showed change in their shape, which is not normal, thickening, detachment of membranes of oocytes, atresia in oocytes is observed. From the observation it is concluded that testis and ovary structure is highly damaged at sublethal concentration of LC 50 concentration of atrazine for 96 hr. duration.
