Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort) is a herbal plant with origins in Europe and Asia but it is now widely grown across the world, including the United States. The molecular structure of Hypericum perforatum has been extensively analysed. Some of the common usages of this herbal plant are supported by scientific pharmaceutical characteristics related to antidepressant, antiviral, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Hypericin and the flavonoid components tend to be responsible for a variety of pharmacological activities. Hypericin is often thought to be the reason for photosensitive reactions seen in Hypericum perforatum m. We have a lot of conflicting information out there on the advantages and disadvantages of using St. John’s wort to combat depression. This review assesses the biochemical properties of the herbal plant related responsible for its antioxidant activities and antidepressant properties.
